Hello everyone! I must apologize for the delay in posting responses for those who have written. I may not always get to commenting on these as quickly as I like, but be assured, I will do my best to get to them! Here is a great post from one of the users here. I was asked to give some feedback on this and was given permission to post it here so we can all learn. The first paragraph is the paragraph I was presented with. The second, was the basic corrections that were necessary to make these correct sentences. The third, has some suggestions and comments as well. Note: I am familiar with this person so I know I am free to do this. By seeing this picture, you feel calm and fresh. It seems like a backyard of some house and there is a beautiful pond surrounded by stones, trees and bushes. The reflection of tress and bushes in the water is mesmerizing. There are two lounge chairs to enjoy the weather and sun. A part of patio is covered with a shed and some patio furniture is present in that area which is perfect for the parties and enjoy the weekends with friends and family. if i were there, I would definitely enjoy this weather by lying on lounge chair with a cup of a tea and snacks. :) By seeing this picture, you feel calm and fresh. If I were there, I would definitely enjoy this weather by lying on the lounge chair with a cup of tea and snacks. :) By seeing this picture, you immediately feel calm and refreshed. It appears to be a backyard of someone’s house and there is a beautiful pond surrounded by stones, trees and bushes. The reflection of trees and bushes in the water is mesmerizing. Around this cool, rippled mirror, there are two lounge chairs to enjoy the sunny weather. A part of the patio is covered with a shed and some patio furniture is present in that area, which is perfect for parties and to enjoy the weekends with friends and family. If I were there, I would definitely enjoy this weather by lying on the lounge chair with a cup of tea and my favorite snacks. “immediately”-I added this to make this a bit more emphatic about how effective this scene is at producing these feelings. The next sentence is just a more native way of saying this. The first way was technically correct. I love the next sentence and the use of the term “mesmerizing”-it fits the scene very nicely! I added the descriptions of the pond-“cool” to contrast with the sunny weather to add how the pond in this setting helps a person feel refreshed by this scene, as pointed out early in the first paragraph; “rippled mirror” to give a simile to further reinforce that first description. I really like that Surbhi added a personal viewpoint-mentioning how perfect the place was for enjoying weekend parties with friends and family. This draws the reader in by giving them a mental picture to relate to and really get a “feel” of how enjoyable this space is or can be. I had to change “laying” to “lying”. To “lay” requires an object to go with it-“lay the book over there”, be we can enjoy “lying” down. This personal touch was a good finale; the mental image and related sensations of drinking tea and eating favored snacks while reclining comfortably, can be pictured in the mind of the reader as part of a party scene, or as an isolated respite from the stress of the day. Nicely done Surbhi. I look forward to reading more from you!

Hello everyone. You may have noticed that I didn't post a photo for today's session; today we'll work on something different. I will introduce a topic from the TOEFL test (don't worry, it'll be an easy one today) and then give each of you a chance to jot down some thoughts that you have on this subject, then each of you will get a chance to speak on this topic. This will not be timed, so please don't worry too much about it. It is just to give everyone a little practice, and the TOEFL topics are quite good topics for discussion. There is no right or wrong answer! This is simply a way to give you more practice on a topic that you probably already have an opinion on and know vocabulary words for. Join me and give it a try, I think you'll find it easier than you think! The session will open in about 5 minutes. Make sure that you are logged into you SpeakAlley account, not just the chat box, and join me on the practice page by clicking on the blue link when you see my pic.

Since no one joined the session on Saturday, we will use the same photo that I posted before, in the session today. Here it is. You can describe the things you see in the picture, tell me how you feel about it, or share a related experience. Its just a chance to get some practice speaking and receive some feedback. Talk with you soon!

Hello. I am posting this because of the volume of these questions that I get asked, almost daily. First, I want to thank everyone who connects with me. I regret that I'm not able to be in chat sessions more. Unfortunately, even though I am often seen as online here, I am actually working on the blog, or answering messages, or looking on the Trending page to comment on other's posts to help with writing, or I might be away from my computer. Other times, I join an open session (spontaneously) only to find no one there.

There are other native speakers on SpeakAlley and some are volunteers who may have more time to chat. Use the Connect page and the filters there to find and connect with native speakers as well as other learners to practice your speaking. You may not realize it, but even speaking with other learners every day WILL improve your own speaking skills; I know, I've witnessed it. In fact, I don't give advice here unless I know that it works.

The first thing you should do here on SpeakAlley, is click on the red, "SiteTour" button at the top right of the screen. If you can't see it, then minimize the chat box by clicking on the black area at the top. The SiteTour button is next to your profile link. This will answer most of the questions that we get here on SpeakAlley.

If you want more information on how to fully benefit from what SpeakAlley has to offer, see these articles, I wrote them just for all of you:

This article contains advice that I have been repeating since I first came here and even I am surprised at how well this works. Please note: speaking quickly does NOT make you sound more like a native. Fast speaking actually makes your accent more pronounced to the ears of a native speaker and can actually (and often does) make you harder, even impossible, to understand.

https://www.speakalley.com/blog/two-easy-tips-to-make-you-sound-more-like-a-native-english-speaker/

This will introduce you to some basic ways that SpeakAlley can help you improve your English speaking skills. For the more advanced learners, the rest of the answer is found in the other articles I'm giving you in this post, but you will definitely want to read this one first: https://www.speakalley.com/blog/free-help-with-english-skills/

This one addresses the first of three very common questions that we get here on SpeakAlley, how to get help with speaking and listening skills, and expounds on what is written in the previous article but doesn't repeat the information. https://www.speakalley.com/blog/how-to-get-free-personal-help-with-english-skills-on-speakalley/

This is another very common question, "I'm new here, how should I begin (to use SpeakAlley.com)?" https://www.speakalley.com/blog/how-to-get-free-personal-help-with-english-skills-on-speakalley-part-2/

This last article gives details on how to join our Essay Sessions. Even if your essay isn't used in a particular session, you will still be allowed in the session to ask questions and benefit from it. This also expounds on the information above and doesn't repeat it-so make sure that you read those first two articles. https://www.speakalley.com/blog/how-to-get-free-personal-help-with-english-skills-on-speakalley-part-3/

I just posted something on the SpeakAlley blog, and I wanted to expound on it, in case anyone was wondering...

[She] was a seamstress who accidentally started a business, entirely by "word of mouth".

Word of mouth means that there is no other kind of advertising except for when something is told by one person to another person and that person tells another person, and so on. The news is spread by people talking about it, but with no other means of advertising. These days, when something is "shared" on the internet in a similar fashion, it is said that it has gone "viral".

Hello everyone! Here is the link to the video on the blog from Thursday's session, along with some personal thoughts of my own (and an added vocabulary word). This session was on some basic items that everyone needs sooner or later. Whether you actually use them or not is another story!

Click here or on the blog link above to hear the vocabulary words we used.
